Avalon Networks Inc. Windows 95/98/ME Setup Instructions

Part 1 Dial-up Networking

1. Double-click on "My Computer."
2. Double-click on "Dial-Up Networking."

If Dial-Up Networking is not there, you will need to add it. To do so, go to the Start button, Settings, Control Panels, and choose the Add/Remove Programs control panel. You should see the Windows Setup tab. Click on this, then go down to Communications and click once. Then click the Details button and make sure that there is a check in the Dialup Networking box. Once this is done, go back to My Computer to continue.

3. Double-click on "Make New Connection" to create a connection icon. You'll be prompted for a name for the connection. The default is "My Connection," but "Avalon" is a more appropriate name. After typing in the name, click "Next" to continue.

4. Now you're asked for the phone number, including area code. Put it in and click "Next" to continue.

"TCP/IP" should be the only thing with a check in it; there may or may not be other protocols (such as NetBEUI) present. If they're there, fine, but they shouldn't be checked.

6. Click on OK. That should put you back to the Network control panel. Click on OK there, too. Windows should tell you that you need to restart the machine. Say yes. When the machine comes back up, everything should work. All Set.

To get connected to the internet, just click on the "Shortcut to Avalon" you created on your desktop. You will be prompted for your username and password. Make sure that your username is ALL lowercase, and that your password is in the same case it was created in (usually lowercase). Sometimes this connect box will already have a different username in the field. Make sure you have your Avalon username entered. After entering this info in, just hit "Connect."

I'm connected...what happens next?

The internet is more of a concept, than it is a thing. There are a variety of sevices one can use with the internet so it's important to note that they are separate. Most popular of all internet services would be the web (WWW) and email.

Exploring the World Wide Web: Windows usually comes with some version of Internet Explorer as a browser. There's likely to be an icon on your destop with that title. If not, this will either be located in your Start Menu --> Programs or in the Start Menu --> Programs --> Accessories --> Internet Tools. Once connected to Avalon, you can use this version of IE as your regular browser or use it to download a newer version or an alternate browser, like Netscape. You can get some web browsers on our webpage (www.avalon.net) under the Software section.

When you launch the browser you should see the ``Start Page'' (or Home Page). You can set this to whatever you want by going in the IE preferences (or settings), or Netscape general preferences (under the options menu) and find the spot for home page.

If you know the address of a website you want to look at, just type in the web address in the Location (or Address) field on your browser and hit return. If you want to search for anything, the browser has a ``search'' option on it that when chosen takes you to a few standard search engines. Visit our the Links section on our webpage for some more search engine sites and other areas of interest.

If you want to do email, you need to configure your email software for your Avalon account. Check out our webpage (www.avalon.net) and go to the Support section. Here you will find instructions for setting up email for the several different email programs we support. We hope you enjoy the internet!
