Avalon Networks Inc. Macintosh Open Transport Setup

I. Obtaining Software

You need to obtain the ppp network installer software from Avalon. This software comes as single stuffit installer program. You can obtain this on a single floppy disk directly from Avalon or you can download the installer off the net. If you have internet access, ftp to avalon.net, login as anonymous, change to the /pub/mac directory and get OTPPPInstaller1.0.bin. This process is explained in more detail in section VII.

MacOpenTrans_Setup1.gifII. Make sure you have Open Transport

Open Transport is a networking package from Apple. It was previously only shipped with the PowerMac 7200, 7500, 8500, and 9500. Now Open Transport can be used on almost ANY Macintosh using system 7.5.3. To verify that you have Open Transport 1.1, look in Control Pannels folder for TCP/IP.

Select the TCP/IP control panel. Under File select Get Info. You should see a window similar to the picture on the right. Make sure your Open Transport version is not 1.0.7 or older. If it is, you can get the upgrade from Avalon Inc or Apple Computer.

III. Installing the PPP software

  1. Restart your Macintosh, holding down the SHIFT key to disable extensions - Do this EVERY TIME you install new software.
  2. Double click on the OTPPPInstaller .
  3. Click on the Continue button.
  4. ;Click on the dialog box that comes up. The software will install into a folder named "Internet" by default.
  5. Choose where to install the internet programs, then click on Install.
  6. Click on Quit.
  7. Restart your Macintosh.

The installer will configure Open Transport for PPP. Open up the TCP/IP control pannel and verify that it looks similar to this screen >

Open up the MacTCP control panel. If PPP is not selected, click on it. Then click on "More..." Under the "Obtain Address:" box, make sure "Server" is selected. Under the "Domain Name Server Information:" box, there are options for Domain, IP Address, and Default. Use the following screenshot as an example, but use the chart to determine the proper DNS numbers for your location:

OTnClassicPPP.jpgV. Configuring the PPP software

Select Config PPP from the Control Panels. Make sure that you are using Free PPP 1.0.5 or newer with Open Transport 1.1. If you are replacing an older PPP control panel, it is best to trash your old PPP preferences file as well (located in the System Folder, in the Preferences files).

Click on the Config button at the bottom. You will see the screen shown at right >

In the Phone num section enter the appropriate Avalon dialup number from below:

Avalon Local Dial-Up Numbers
319-358-9910 for Iowa City (V.90 56k)

515-334-3143 for Des Moines (V.90 56k)

319-399-1221 for Cedar Rapids (V.90 56k) 319-226-6827 for Waterloo (V.90 56k)
319-668-9533 for Williamsburg (V.90 56k) 712-224-5600 for Sioux City (V.90 56k)
  402-494-0776 for Homer, NE (V.90 56k)

If you have a 14.4K modem, select a Port Speed of 38400. If you have a 28.8K modem, select a Port Speed of 38400 or 57600.

  1. Click on Connect Script...
  2. Set all the buttons on the left side to out.
  3. Blank out all eight of the fields in the middle.
  4. Uncheck all of the CR boxes on the right.
  5. Click on OK.
  6. Click on Authentication and enter your Username (not to be confused with your real name) and password. Your password can be left blank if you want to enter it each timeyou connect.
  7. Click on OK. Click on Done .

NOTE: You may want to dial more than one phone number. If so, just click on "New" at the main screen when you open up "ConfigPPP". Follow the same instructions as before, except put in the different phone number. When you connect, just switch the PPP Server menu at the bottom between the different setups you created, then hit "Connect".

VI. Testing your connection

In the Config PPP control pannel, click on the Open button. A dialog box will come up telling you the progress of the connection. If it is successful, the progress bar will go all the way across and you will see two smiley faces and the words PPP UP in the upper left hand corner of the Config PPP control pannel.

VII. Obtaining additional network software

Your PPP installer package only comes with the basic internet software packages: telnet, ftp, and mail. You will likely want to obtain additional software. In particular, you will probably want a World Wide Web browser, such as Netscape or Internet Explorer. You can obtain these through the following method:

  1. Open the Internet folder you created during the installer.
  2. Double click on Fetch.
  3. You will see a window box with four different options. In the Hostname box, type: ftp.avalon.net
  4. In the Username box put anonymous. Leave the password blank.
  5. In the directory box type: /pub/browsers/macintosh
  6. Click OK to connect.

You should then see choices between IE and Netscape. Just double click on whichever browser you want. You might then need to choose between a 68K machine (Performas, older macs) and a PowerMac. If your Mac is older, you probably want Netscape 2.02.

The installer is a file that ends with .hqx or .bin. Double click on this file, and a window opens asking where to download the file to. Save the file into your Internet folder. Fetch will then proceed to download the installer. This could take at least 30 minutes.

  1. Once downloaded, quit Fetch .
  2. Run the browser installer and follow the directions.
  3. It will install whichever browser you choose into a specified folder.

VIII. Setting up Eudora POPmail

  1. Run Eudora. The first time, you should see a menu screen. If you don't, select Select Special -> Setup to bring it up.
  2. Fill in POP Account with your email address in the form of jdoe@avalon.net
  3. Fill in your real name.
  4. Select the Checking Mail ooption.
  5. In the SMTP field, type: avalon.net
  6. Click on OK.

You can now check your mail by selecting File->Check Mail.

IX. Using your Avalon dial-up PPP Connection

To create a connection, bring up the Config PPP control panel and click on Open. Once a connection is established you can use any internet software such as: Netscape, IE, Fetch, mail, telnet. Your connection will stay up until you shut it down. To close a connection bring up the Config PPP control panel and click Close.

Enjoy the Internet!
