Avalon
Networks Inc. Macintosh FreePPP 2.6 Setup
I.
Install Software
- Insert the
Avalon FreePPP disk. Double-click on the FreePPP Installer icon on
your desktop.
- Double-click
on the FreePPP monkey icon to begin the install.
- Usually you
can just click on "Next" to follow through the menus. The
"default" selections of what to install, and where, are
fine. Once the install is complete, it will ask you to restart your
computer.
II.
Configure MacTCP
- Under the rainbow
apple icon, choose "control panels". You have a control
panel named either MacTCP or TCP/IP. Macs running older operating
system versions usually have MacTCP, while newer systems running OpenTransport
have TCP/IP. If you have MacTCP, continue with this section. If you
have TCP/IP, skip to Step III...
- Open the MacTCP
control panel. Make sure that only the FreePPP icon is highlighted.
- Click on "More..."
- Under the "Obtain
Address:" box, make sure Server is selected.
- Under the "Domain
Name Server Information:" box, there are options for Domain,
IP Address, and Default. Use the chart below to determine your DNS
IP addresses.
DNS IP addresses
will NOT match the ones in the picture.
Don't worry about
the other fields. They'll change on their own as you connect or disconnect.

Configure TCP/IP
- If you have
TCP/IP instead, go to your Control Panel folder and open up TCP/IP.
You'll probably get a warning saying, "The previously selected
version of MacPPP is no longer available and FreePPP will be used
instead." That's fine.
- Select "Connect
Via: FreePPP"
- Choose "Configure:
Using PPP Server"
- Add the two
numbers coresponding with your location from the chart below to the
"Name server addr" box:

control panel and save changes.
IV.
Configure FreePPP
- After configuring
the TCP control panel, restart your machine again. The FreePPP may
already be configured, but these instructions will help you make any
changes or additions to it. Once you've restarted, you may see a new
telephone icon in your menu bar. If not, don't worry.
- Under the phone
icon, open the FreePPP setup. If you don't have the phone, double
click on your main Mac Hardrive icon. You'll have a new folder called
FreePPP 2.6 Folder. In that folder, double-click on the FreePPP Setup
icon.
- Click on the
little arrow in the lower-left corner of the menu to expand the views.
You should have 4 tabs: General, Accounts, Locations, and Modems.
Click on the Accounts tab.
- Click on Edit
to edit existing dialup accounts, or New to create a new one.
- You should
see a new window open with 3 more tabs: Accounts, Dialup, and Options.
Under the Accounts tab, put in a Name for this account. For
example, if you want this account to dialing the X2 pool, perhaps
name it "Avalon X2."
- Under the "Connect:"
option, choose "Directly". Don't use the Connect Script
method anymore. Enter your username (always lowercase!) and password
(usually lowercase, but varies).
- Click on the
Dialup Tab. In the Main Number section, put a phone number
from the following list:
|
Avalon
Local Dial-Up Numbers
|
| 319-358-9910
for Iowa City (V.90 56k) |
515-334-3143 for

|
| 319-668-9533 for
Williamsburg (V.90 56k) |
319-226-6827 for
Waterloo (V.90 56k) |
| 319-399-1221 for
Cedar Rapids (V.90 56k) |
712-224-5600 for
Sioux City (V.90 56k) |
| |
402-494-0776 for
Homer, NE (V.90 56k) |
- You shouldn't
need to check "Dial as Long Distance" or "Dial Area Code." If you
have call waiting and want to disable it, put *70, in front of the
number. Click OK.
- Click on the
Modems tab. Click Edit to Change, or New to add a modem configuration.
Type in anything for the name of your modem.
- For "Connected
To:" choose Modem Port.
- For port speed,
choose 57600 or 115200 bps. If that option is unavailable, just choose
any speed higher than your modem speed. You generally want to choose
a speed two selections higher than your modem speed.
- For "Flow
Control:" choose CTS & RTS (DTR). Click OK.
- If you want
to add more phone numbers, just click on the Accounts tab,
then New, and repeat the setup process above. When you're finished,
restart your machine.
V.
Connecting
Once
you've restarted your machine, you should have the FreePPP icon in your
menu. If not, give us a call.
To connect,
just go to the FreePPP menu(the blue telephone icon) and select "Open
PPP Connection".
If you
want to choose which number to dial, go to the FreePPP menu and select
"Open FreePPP Setup." In the setup menu, just switch the "Connect
to:" option to your other number. There is no difference between
clicking on Connect in the Setup menu and choosing "Open PPP Connection"
under the FreePPP menu.
It's
usually better to open the FreePPP connection first, and then open up
your internet applications (like web browser or email) after the connection
is established.
Once
you're done with your internet access, select "Close PPP Connection"
from the menu.
Browsing
the Internet
Most
Macs come with Netscape Navigator, the software you will use to
browse web pages after connecting to Avalon. Newer versions of web browsers
can be found on our webpage (www.avalon.net) under the Software section.
Your
browser is probably located in a folder labeled "Internet" or
something similar. If you can't find a browser, you can use the Finder
to locate it. To use the Finder, click on the computer icon in the top
right corner of your screen and select Finder. Next, Choose Find
under the File menu, or type: open-apple f. Make sure you are searching
on your main hard drive and enter the file name or program you are looking
for in the right text field. (In this case type "Netscape.")
A window should appear showing the files found and where they are located
underneath.
When
you launch the browser you should see the ``Start Page'' (or Home Page).
You can set this to whatever you want by going to the Netscape general
preferences (under the options menu) and finding the spot for home page.
If you know the address of a website you want to look at, just type in
the web address in the Address field on your browser and press return.
If you want to search for something, the browser has a ``search'' option
on it that takes you to a few standard search engines. Visit the Links
section on our webpage for other search engine sites and other areas of
interest.
Enjoy
the Internet!
